The Correct Way to Repair a Faulty Touchscreen on Composition Media and Discover Media MIB2 PQ Units
If your unit’s touchscreen has stopped responding, presses by itself (“ghost touch”) or has bubbles under the glass, or a previous repair didn’t last, this explains how the repair should be done and what to avoid.
How the touchscreen is built
On these units the touch panel is bonded to the display with a full layer of optical glue, not just around the edges. Separating them without the right tools and experience can crack the display, and a cracked display can’t be repaired, only replaced.
The correct repair
We separate the old touch panel from the display, clean off all the old glue and fit a brand-new touch panel. The unit then looks and works as it did from the factory.
The shortcut to avoid
Many repairers leave the faulty touch panel in place and stick a new one on top. It may work for a while, but the extra layer doesn’t fit the space the display was designed for. It puts pressure on the display and its circuit board, which can crack the display or damage the board, and it makes the picture less clear. We regularly see units that have been “repaired” this way.
Can you do it yourself?
Swapping the display assembly only needs a few screws and two ribbon cables. Separating the touch panel from the display is a different job. Without the right tools it’s very easy to crack the display, and we see many units damaged by people trying it with a blade or a screwdriver.
Common faults
- touchscreen not responding
- the screen selecting or moving things by itself
- dead spots, for example you can’t type a postcode
- scratches or cracks on the touch panel (not the display itself)
